Several celebrities have recently endorsed doing a coffee enema and have raved about the benefits. A clean colon is essential to good overall health and especially the health of your digestive system. However, is a coffee enema the best way to accomplish cleansing the colon? Where did the practice even come from?

It was in the 1920's that a German scientist realized that caffeine had the power to not only act as a stimulant, but could open up bile ducts as well. By testing on animals they realized that caffeine creates bile in the liver. A doctor by the name of Max Gerson took this research a step further and began using it as treatment for tuberculosis and cancer. His reasoning was that caffeine enters the liver through the portal vein and helps the liver to detoxify the rest of the body. He found that by performing coffee enemas, you not only strengthen and cleanse the colon, you do the same to the liver as well.

In 1958 he put out a bood on his beliefs, theories, and findings. He showed proof that 50 cancer patients had been cured of cancer by using his coffee enema method and eating a specific diet. His reports were largely dismissed by his colleagues, despite his claims of success. The United States National Cancer Institute investigated his claims and found that there was no real truth to his findings and claims.

It is generally accepted today, that several of his claims of benefits are true. Regular coffee enemas do help to generally make the colon and liver function more efficiently. They can also remove toxins and bad bacteria from the colon, preventing them from getting into the bloodstream.

There are several side effects or risks associated with coffee enemas too. Dehydration, caffeine addiction and electrolyte imbalance are just a few. Make sure to do your research and learn as much as you can about the benefits and risks of an enema with coffee, or any other liquid.
